Tour Plan

1
Day 1: Phnom Penh
Upon arrival in the Cambodian capital, transfer to the hotel and spend the rest of the day exploring one of Phnom Penh’s most extraordinary landmarks – the Royal Palace. Located close to the riverfront, the complex was built in 1866 by King Norodom and serves as the royal residence of the reigning monarch. Wander around the palace grounds and marvel at the striking Silver Pagoda. Named after its gleaming silver-tiled floor, the structure is home to a crystal Emerald Buddha sculpture as well as a life-sized, solid golden Buddha statue, encrusted with thousands of diamonds.
2
Day 2: Phnom Penh
Wake up early and travel to the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre (PTWRC). Supported by the Australian NGO ‘Free the Bears’, the sanctuary cares for a variety of animals, including 120 sun and moon bears, rescued from illegal wildlife trade. Enjoy a unique behind-the-scenes tour and learn more about the centre’s conservation work. Listen to the individual stories of the animals that have been saved from the hands of illegal poachers and traffickers and help feed the adorable bears.
3
Day 3: Phnom Penh – Siem Reap
Escape the hectic life of the city with a morning trip to Koh Dach. Only a few kilometres from the capital, this sleepy village on the banks of the Mekong River feels like a world away. Immerse in the peaceful atmosphere whilst strolling around the island, famous for its silk weaving tradition. Visit the silk centre and village to observe local artisans at work and learn about the complex processes involved in the fabric’s production. Pick up a beautiful scarf or shirt before leaving.
4
Day 4: Siem Reap
Wake up early and spend an adventurous day exploring the majestic temples of Angkor. For an even more spectacular experience, board a tethered balloon and marvel at the spectacular scenery, dotted with ancient temples, from above. Back on solid ground, take a closer look at the mighty Angkor Wat. Discover the decorative carvings along the ancient walls and the Hall of Echoes before continuing to the magical Ta Phrom. Famous thanks to its appearance in the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider film, this unique temple is wrapped in giant roots and has large trees growing from its roofs. As soon the sun rises high in the sky, escape the midday heat and return to the hotel for some lunch. Spend the afternoon relaxing by the pool or strolling through the charming town, lined with quaint French colonial buildings.
5
Day 5: Siem Reap
Head back to the amazing temple complex and spend the morning visiting Angkor Thom. The ancient Royal Palace comprises several remarkable structures with its main highlight being the mesmerising Bayon temple. Gaze into the hundreds of smiling faces carved into the stone before visiting the sculptures of the Royal terraces, including the Terrace of Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King. Finish today’s exploration with a climb to the top of the three-tiered Phimeanakas temple and enjoy some last impressive views of surrounding temples. Head back to town to enjoy a well-deserved lunch and spend the rest of the day at leisure.
6
Day 6: Siem Reap
Enjoy a scenic ride to the mountain range of Phnom Kulen, a popular pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists. Stroll along the River of a Thousand Lingas and discover the countless ancient carvings on the sandstone riverbed. Continue the walk and visit the enormous Reclining Buddha before relaxing with a picnic by a stunning waterfall. Take a dip in its refreshing pool to cool off and head back to Siem Reap.
7
Day 7: Siem Reap
Hop on a tuk tuk and zip to the banks of the Tonle Sap, Cambodia’s largest freshwater lake. Embark on a relaxed boat ride and spend the morning exploring floating villages and learning about life on the water.
8
Day 8: Siem Reap
Delve deeper into the Cambodian culture and experience a homestay with a local family. After a one hour’s drive, swap the motorised vehicle for an ox cart and travel the rest of the way by this traditional means of transport. Upon arrival at a small village, get to know the local community and enjoy some lunch together. In the afternoon, lend a hand and help out with fishing, farming or animal husbandry duties. An incredible and authentic experience that will be both memorable and eye-opening.
